Name:
Shoned Owen
Named 5x60 Officer of the Month for April, Shoned is just one of the motivators recruited by Sport Wales’ 5x60 scheme, which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government.
Supported locally by Gwynedd County Council, it is designed to get more secondary school pupils taking part in 60 minutes of physical activity five times a week.
The 34-year-old from Y Ffor near Pwllheli, a former lifeguard and keen runner, has persuaded scores of pupils to get off the sidelines into the 5x60 activity sessions.
Shoned has been in post for nearly three years, and in that time has introduced a timetable of 13 activities and was instrumental in setting up three community clubs locally: Llyn Cycling Club, Clwb Antur Dwyfor Climbing Club and Llyn Amateur Boxing Club.
She explains: "I think that getting kids involved who haven’t shown previous interest in sports has to be a success. I had one parent tell me that her son wasn’t interested in traditional sports such as football and rugby. She was glad that the 5x60 scheme had alternatives to offer him as he participated in climbing, squash, sailing and boxing. I enjoy being able to compliment what the schools already provide, and both P.E. departments are very supportive of the scheme."
